RETROFIT: SMEDEN MULTIFAMILY BUILDING
GEOTHERMAL DESIGN HIGHLIGHT
Smeden is an almost 100-year-old multi-family building with commercial space on the first floor in Stockholm, Sweden. There are 44,000 square feet of heated area. The building retrofitted the district heating to a ground source heat pump for heating purposes only.
The borefield was installed in 2018 in the basement for a total of 16, 2.5-inch boreholes each at a depth of 450 feet. These boreholes also utilized inclined borehole drilling up to the property line. The system was able to provide 300 kWh for the annual heating load, 80 MWh for domestic hot water, and 25 MWh for the annual cooling load.
